1. How long will it take for Oral Dog Warts to go away?
Most dogs see an improvement anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks but it can take longer depending on your dog’s overall health.
2. Can the warts be on other parts of the body instead of the mouth?
Canine warts are usually found in the mouth, but they can appear in other places. Our dog had one on his foot too. If the majority of the warts are located somewhere other than the mouth it might be another form of warts and not Canine Oral Papilloma Virus (COPV).
3. My dog had his warts surgically removed and now they’re coming back. The Vet says chemo is the way to go.
Chemo!! No way! There may not be a need for that at all! Boost your dog’s immune system first and see if that does the trick!! Surgically removing the warts will do nothing to boost the immune system and give the body a chance to fight them off. Removal should be a last resort and only if the warts are affecting your dog’s eating or breathing.
4. I have read conflicting info on how long your dog is contagious after the warts are gone. What have you found in your research? My Vet said it is hard to say but could be 1-2 months.
That seems to be about right. We waited 2 months after the last wart was gone before we let our dog back into the dog parks.
5. Should we throw out his toys and buy new? Is there anything else we should do around the house that will help?
I wouldn’t throw out the toys but I would suggest giving them a good cleaning. In fact, most toys will survive a trip through the sudsy hot water cycle in a wash machine just fine. I would also avoid letting other dogs play with them.
6. Can people get warts if the dog has mouth warts and licks them?
COPV is only contagious from dog to dog. Still, I would recommend keeping the licking to a minimum.
